Homemade Big Mac and Fries
A home-cooked fakeaway version of the classic Big Mac, tastier and more filling than the original.
Ingredients
- 80g tomato sauce
- 80g mayonnaise
- 1/2 tsp sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp white vinegar
- 1 onion (split), 1 tbsp crispy onions
- 500g beef steak mince
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 2 tsp oil
- 4 crispy lettuce leaves
- 4 jacket-sized potatoes
- 4 gherkins
- 100g cheddar cheese
- 4 brioche buns
- 4 wooden skewers
Method
Step 1: Make Sauce
Mix tomato sauce and mayonnaise in a bowl.
Step 2: Chop Onion
Finely chop the onion.
Step 3: Mix Sauce
Stir half of the chopped onion into the sauce mixture.
Step 4: Crispy Onions
Add the dried onions to the mixture and stir.
Step 5: Fry Onions
Fry the remaining onion in the oil on a low/med heat until soft.
Step 6: Prep Mince
Place the mince in a mixing bowl.
Step 7: Mix Burger
Add the fried onions, egg, salt and pepper.
Step 8: Shape
Mix the ingredients by hand. Divide into four pieces.
Step 9: Fry Burgers
Roll the burger mix into balls and flatten in a frying pan. Fry on a medium heat until browned.
Step 10: Prep Chips
Chop the potatoes into chips, approx. 1cm thick.
Step 11: Fry Chips
Using a deep fat fryer at 150°C, fry the chips in batches until golden brown.
Step 12: Warm Chips
Add the batches of chips to a baking tray and keep warm in the oven.
Step 13: Toast Buns
Lightly toast the buns.
Step 14: Base Sauce
Add a covering of burger sauce to the base of each bun.
Step 15: Add Lettuce
Add a layer of lettuce.
Step 16: Add Burger
Add a burger.
Step 17: Middle Sauce
Add another layer of sauce.
Step 18: Add Cheese
Add a layer of sliced cheddar.
Step 19: Add Gherkin
Add a layer of sliced gherkin.
Step 20: Lid Sauce
Add a layer of sauce to the bun lid.
Step 21: Assemble
Add the bun lid and place the skewer through the burger to prevent it from falling apart.
Step 22: Microwave Finish
Microwave each plate for 1 minute to melt the cheese and get that takeaway feel.
Step 23: Serve Chips
Season the chips with salt and vinegar to taste and serve in a bowl.
Step 24: Serve Meal
Serve the burger with a portion of the chips and remaining burger sauce.
Alternatives
The cheese can be omitted or replaced with dairy-free cheese. The gherkins can be omitted if they are not to your liking. If you prefer the 'alternative' burger option, skip the sauce, cook the burgers under a grill and omit the microwave section. Oven chips or French fries can be used, and brioche buns can be replaced with a gluten-free option.
